Lye Pretreatment Instructions
WOCA Lyes are optional pretreatments for wood that age, color and patina wood. Wood only treated with lye is still unfinished wood. The final look for wood with a lye applied depends on the WOCA Oil chosen as the topcoat finish.

Can I mix or layer lyes?
We do not recommend mixing different lyes, but you can layer them. Refer to the WOCA Color Guide for layering ideas.
Can I apply 2 coats of lye?
1 coat of lye is sufficient based on the coverage rate of 250 sf per 2.5 liter container.
Should I apply more than 1 coat of lye?

What is denibbing, and what do you recommend to denib lye?
Denibbing is the process of polishing a dried lye surface with a green polishing pad to remove lye pigment from the surface and reveal the wood.
Do I have to apply a finish over a lye?
Wood Lye is not a finish, it’s a pretreatment. Lye treated wood is still unfinished wood, so yes, you will need to add an oil finish to protect the flooring after applying lye. Most customers topcoat/finish with either Diamond Oil Active or Master Color Oil in White or Extra White for that signature Scandinavian look.
Can I use Wood Lye on Pine or should I use Softwood Lye?
Wood Lye can be used on Softwoods like Pine, it has a milder effect than WOCA Softwood Lye.
What topcoat should I use over Wood Lye?
Most customers topcoat with WOCA Master Color Oil or Diamond Oil Active in White or Extra White for that signature Scandinavian look.
Can I use Wood Lye on any wood species?
Wood Lye can be used on any wood species, but desired results vary.
