Frequently Asked Questions

What types of wood can Driftwood Lye be used on?

Driftwood Lye is only for use on Oak Wood, because it reacts with the tannins found in Oak wood. You can use one of our other pre-finishing lye products on other wood species.

Why is there a Hazmat shipping fee?

Due to the Sodium Hydroxide found in Driftwood Lye, Antique Lye, and Softwood Lye products, they have been deemed hazardous by the Department of Transportation and requires special documentation and transportation.

A $75.00 Hazmat Fee per 1 box (4 2.5L containers or 8 testers) is mandated by the Department of Transportation and is required for ground shipping. These orders will be shipped using FedEx Ground and a signature is required upon delivery.

Do I need to add an oil finish or topcoat to my floors after applying the lye?

Wood Lye is not a finish, it’s a pretreatment. Lye treated wood is still unfinished wood, so yes, you will need to add an oil finish to protect the flooring after applying lye. Most customers topcoat/finish with either Diamond Oil Active or Master Color Oil in White or Extra White for that signature Scandinavian look.

Can I apply a polyurethane over a lye?

Yes, but the lye must be denibbed with a green pad and neutralized with Intensive Wood Cleaner prior to applying polyurethane. Intensive Wood Cleaner must be used to neutralize the lye otherwise it will corrode a water based finish.
