Frequently Asked Questions
Why should I use a Lye or Pretreatment?
Do I have to apply a finish over a lye?
Yes. Wood Lye is not a finish. Lye-treated wood remains unfinished and must be sealed with an oil finish such as Diamond Oil Active or Master Color Oil for protection and durability. This final oil step is essential because lye creates the color effect, while the oil helps protect the wood surface.
Is WOCA Wood Lye a bleach or a paint?
No. WOCA Wood Lye is not a bleach or paint. It is a pretreatment that minimizes yellowing and reduces red or pink tones before oil finishing.
Can I apply a polyurethane over a lye?
Yes, but the lye must be denibbed with a green pad and neutralized with Intensive Wood Cleaner prior to applying polyurethane. Intensive Wood Cleaner must be used to neutralize the lye; otherwise, it will corrode a water-based finish.
Which type of lye should I choose?
- Wood Lye can be used on all wood species.
- Antique Lye and Driftwood Lye is for use on Red and White Oak.
- Softwood Lye is for use on Douglas Fir, Larch and Pine wood species.
